Baby Banana Experiment

I'm on a new kick to try different varieties of fruits and vegetables.  Above is my haul of "baby bananas."  According to Jo Robinson, author of "Eating on the Wild Side, The Missing Link to Optimum Health," unusual bananas

"have heady aromas, more intense flavor, and undertones of apple, pear, papaya, vanilla, cardamom, and lemon.  They are also more nutritious.  The color of the flesh is the key.  The deeper and more vivid the color of the flesh, the better it is for you."

She later says that these, baby bananas are richer in carotenoids than the ordinary variety which you can see in my photo.  The flesh is much more yellow.

I also learned that these are thinner skinned and inedible until ripe when the skin is almost totally brown.  I patiently waited and it took awhile, a week I'd say.

But the payoff was pretty sweet!  They are creamier and much more intensely flavored..  I don't think I tasted the other fruits she mentioned but this was a really strongly flavored banana.  Since I love bananas this was great.  I ate some and peeled, sliced, and froze some.  I will be buying more.  They are more expensive, but also more nutritious.  Next, I want to find the red banana she speaks of which is just like these but very red with salmon-colored flesh!  That sounds interesting.

Instead of buying the latest processed food offering, why not opt for alternative fruits and vegetables to keep things interesting?  It would be a lot more healthy, for sure!

Which Lawn?  Which World?

Do you see the line right down the middle?  Green, lush turf on the left with lovely little white flowers and some small dandelions (think salad!).  The death zone on the right is what is left after the chemical spray was applied to the neighbor's lawn, with even the grass struggling to survive.

Do you mean to tell me it's the lawn on the RIGHT that is preferable?  The lawn on the right which requires the health and maybe even the life of the kid who applied the chemicals (with no protective clothing)?  And the bill that has to be paid to the company that comes to spread the poisons?  And the pollinators like the bees that have to die so that eventually we won't have food?  And the water that has to be tainted for us to drink?  And the air that is ghastly for a week after the application?   And the children and pets walk barefoot on it THE SAME DAY it was applied?!

I want to know how we got lulled into such utter idiocy?!

Did you know the lawn on the left can be mowed?  It is green.  It is tough to walk and play on.  And I'm not kidding about eating it.  Did you know:

While dandelions are considered a nuisance by those who prefer a pristine lawn, others know the many benefits that dandelions have yielded over centuries in the areas of folk medicine and healthy eating. It’s proven as an antioxidant that also lowers blood sugar, but it may also be useful in treating jaundice, cirrhosis, edema, gout, eczema, and acne. There’s even evidence that dandelion greens might prove helpful in treating AIDS and herpes. Highly nutritious as an ingredient in salads, its roots show ever-increasing possibilities in the fight against cancer.
Food  Facts by Mercola.com

It's completely upside down!  We should be growing dandelions to eat!  At the very least the spread of toxic chemicals on lawns must stop.  We need to think about the price in human health we will pay to achieve such an unnatural lawn.

Is Silence Best in a Massage?

A client thanked me very specially the other day.  I had found a spot for her in my busy schedule.  I had also completed an hour of very customized treatment which addressed her issues specifically and she felt better.  But while she thanked me for these things, she was not making a point to express deep gratitude for these fine services I had just provided.

She wanted me to know how much she greatly appreciated my listening to her.

She said that it felt so good to be understood by someone like me.  She told me because she looks fine, people think she can't be in as much pain as she is.  And it was so great to be believed by a person who understands how much she really did hurt.

To be in chronic pain is draining, depressing, and difficult.  Creating a space for clients to talk about their struggle, process the sensations in their bodies as they receive massage work, and reassure them is an important aspect of this work.  This is why massage treatment rooms should not, in my opinion, have rules about silence or talk.  There is an art to finding the right amount of talk that is right for each client and for each session.

I find strict silence is almost never right.  A little small talk makes people feel that we are operating within normal social parameters and they can relax.

Therapists chatting on and on about their lives is definitely never right either.  The client knows the therapist has left the room mentally when this happens and they rightfully feel cheated.

And then there is the middle where good decisions have to be made.  For therapeutic work there will be some involvement required for the client to let me know about pain levels and trigger point referrals and changes in range of motion or ease of motion.  There may also be those times when the client just wants to talk about whatever is on their minds.  As long as it is not to entertain me, I try to just listen and be positive and helpful any way I know as long as I am not straying beyond my scope of practice.  When a client needs a referral for other professionals, that is another decision to make to benefit the client.

But with this client, I knew I had done good work.   I had done excellent, beneficial, pain-relieving massage work.  And I had believed my client about her pain and listened to her talk about her struggle with true compassion.  What an honor to be able to support another person on their life's journey.

She thanked me, but I felt just as grateful as she did.

Congrats July Grads!

There is such joy on graduation day!  Students always say it's a bittersweet day for them.  This is music to my ears because I like to hear that their experience at WSMT was enjoyable.  Everyone at WSMT works hard to engage students in the knowledge and skills of the massage world in interesting ways.  Our small classes naturally form communities where students feel supported by each other.  Many times we see our graduates coming back for continuing education classes and student clinic massages, though.  So it is not good-bye!

Reading Labels

It can become tiresome, this reading of labels, but alas, no one cares about your health as much as you.  So, it is wise to continue on with it.  Here is a product from a company I have purchased from for many years.  Who would think spices and herbs could be problematic?

Check out the ingredient label, though.  You will see something called, "oleoresin of celery, etc."  What the heck is THAT?!  Why would it be needed in a spice blend?

When I look up oleoresin this is what I find:

o·le·o·res·in
/ˌōlē-ōˈrezən/
noun

noun: oleoresin; plural noun: oleoresins
a natural or artificial mixture of essential oils and a resin, e.g., balsam

Really?  I can't even tell if this ingredient is natural or artificial.  They have to have artificial  or additional flavorings in our spices now?  Herbs and spices are some of the most healthy things you can eat!  Beware the companies that put together blends for you because you could be looking at added ingredients you don't want.  This bottle came free from Penzey's.  I know why, and I'm not buying it.  I can make my own blends from clean ingredients, thank you very much!

Life-Changing Tidying

I just finished reading this book.  I don't know if it is "life-changing magic" but I am enjoying a more streamlined home.  Some points from the book that have really worked for me:

1.  Start with an easy category like clothes.  Gather all your clothes and sort.  Then move on to other categories.  Leave difficult, emotional categories for last.  Fold and store them vertically so you can see everything you have.

2.  Hold each item and ask yourself if it gives you joy.  If not, discard it (donate, recycle, or throw out if unusable.)

Interestingly, when viewed through this one simple question, many items I thought I couldn't get rid of are easily leaving.

Many people who work with others to declutter their homes say that their clients lose weight, and get healthier, and happier as a result.  I can see how this happens rather naturally.  Your home is easier to clean so you do it more.  There is space around you.  Your home provides you with more rest because it is not crammed full of things you never use, causing guilt and stress.

The author comes from an Asian background and suggests religious concepts such as thanking your possessions for how hard they work for you, and greeting your house.  I can easily translate these ideas to my world view by thanking my Creator, God, for providing me with everything I have. Sometimes people get hung up on differences like this, but I find the challenge to my world view forces me to look at it again in a different way.  I have become more thankful as a result, I think God teaches in many ways!

The 9-inch Diet

Want to lose weight?  Use smaller plates.  Alex Bogusky bought an old weekend retreat and when he went to put his dishes in the cupboards the doors wouldn't close.  This perplexed him until he realized that plates used to be 9 inches wide and now they are often 12 inches or larger.  He surmised that if he just switched to smaller plates he would lose weight without even being conscious of eating less.  And he was right!  He then wrote the book, "The 9-Inch Diet."

I have found my dinner plates to be 10 inches and my salad/sandwich plates to be 9 inches.  Most nights for dinner I use the 9 inch plates.  It's an easy switch and it is true I can't pile quite as much food onto the smaller plate!

Have You Gotten Your Glucocinolates Today?

Glucocinolates are the pungent sulfur-containing compounds found in cruciferous vegetables.  They are what give radishes, cabbage and even horseradish their bite.  There is good science behind the idea that eating vegetables with these chemicals prevent cancers.

Fall is the best time to eat them, too, because they sweeten up and become extra tasty with a little cool weather.  At the farmers market make sure to pick some Brassica genus including: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, kale, kohlrabi, mustard, rutabaga, turnips, bok choy, and Chinese cabbage. Arugula, horseradish, radish, and watercress are also cruciferous vegetables.  Most of these wash, chop and throw into salads nicely, but a quick steaming is also nice!

What Does Continuing Education Do For You?

I'm just back from two days of teaching continuing education classes with the fine massage therapists of North Dakota and Minnesota.  We took a poll in the room on day 2; there was a combined total of 200 years of expertise!  Dan, in the photo above, has 12 more years of massage work under his belt than I do (Dan:  33, Mary:  21).  What could I possibly teach someone with such a long career?

Well, I started off by saying I fully expected to learn a few tricks myself because I always learn from my students when I'm teaching.  Secondly, I said those in the room with 1 year of experience bring a sparkle of newness to this work for those of us doing it a long time.  That sparkle is just as important to all of us as the knowledge and skill of the others.  And the review and deepening of knowledge is what I was after for most of the participants.

Chione, another participant told me it was that sparkle she desperately needed back.  Others were grateful for the review anatomy trips we took as well as new technique ideas and a time to brush up on current research around massage topics.  And Dan made a point to tell me afterward that he always kind of dreads going to workshops like these but he can't imagine why.  He found these two days to be re-energizing for his practice and a lot of fun.

It is kind of a bother to interrupt your normal routines and schedules, but it can be greatly valuable to your professional development.  Your overall job satisfaction will grow when you obtain more and better skill at helping your clients.  Getting together with other therapists is great for what I called, "cross-pollination" too.

We are signing people up for our Skull Painting class (talk about fun!) and Ethics (not usually fun, but people in our 2 hour class have said they wished it was longer, so we must be doing something right!)  Check out our Continuing Education page

Stacy's Story

Stacy is a graduate of ours who has remained a friend on Facebook over the years. I couldn’t help noticing her transformation in the photos she was posting so I contacted her to see if she would share her story with us and she said she would. It’s a good story!

Stacy has lost just about 100 pounds in the last year or so. Before this she doesn’t ever remember a time in her life when she wasn’t overweight. She doesn’t think she really ate that much or that badly, but it was the standard American diet (SAD) which included processed food, sugar and grains. As a younger person she had broken her ankle and then sprained it many times, but all of a sudden it became very, very painful.  Her other ankle began to hurt from compensating.  She found it difficult to walk. This was alarming for a 30-year old.

Doctors were thinking it was gout or related to her weight because she also had irritable bowel syndrome and allergies. She had a hard time finding a correct diagnosis, though, because blood tests and x-rays were normal. Finally an orthopedic surgeon correctly diagnosed it as a misaligned ankle and arthritis in the ankle joint. Surgery was recommended. Stacy asked what else could be done because she wasn’t keen on having surgery. The doctor said she should start with physical therapy. The stretches and movements started to help, but didn’t completely alleviate the pain.

Meanwhile Stacy was trying lots of different alternative therapies, some with significant relief like acupuncture, albeit temporary. During this time she found an naturopathic doctor who counseled her about how to eat.  This was not a diet, but rather, a lifestyle change. It was paying attention to what Stacy was feeding her body. The suggestion was to eliminate foods that increase inflammation in the body. That would be: processed foods, sugars, grains, meat. At first Stacy was very strict about this to see if it would make any difference in her pain. It did. Almost immediately.

Stacy felt so much better she was convinced she needed to stay with this way of eating. As a result, her weight dropped steadily, even though this wasn’t the primary goal! Now Stacy has reintroduced meat and some rice and corn, but she almost always avoids processed foods and sugars. Even with meat, Stacy says she listens to her body now. She can tell when she’s low on iron and needs some red meat because her energy lags a bit and her lips get pale. If she eats too much meat or peanut butter her ankle begins to hurt a little. Stacy has developed a whole new relationship with her body and her body is enjoying being listened to and receiving what it needs. Stacy is living in harmony with her body, not in opposition to it. This is not just health, but wellness in its truest sense.

The standard American diet (SAD) typically produces a lot of inflammation in the body. Inflammation when there is an injury or infection is the body’s process for healing. Here is a case of too much turning a good thing into a bad thing. Saturating every cell in inflammatory chemicals due to ongoing lifestyle elements like food intake and movement levels creates illness. Changes in normal cell function and abnormalities in the healing process occur. Joint cartilage breaks down due to the inflammatory swelling and irritation. Every organ including the brain suffers under the strain often producing mental and emotional imbalances, digestive disorders, and skin problems. Virtually every system of the body is affected. This situation typically gets progressively worse as time goes on.

The good news, which Stacy discovered, is that this can usually be turned around by making lifestyle changes, especially by adopting an anti-inflammatory food plan.
Dr. Andrew Weil has good information on his website about this type of eating.

Interestingly, Stacy says people she knows who still eat the SAD way assume that now that she’s lost weight she can end her “diet” and go back to the SAD way of eating. Many people don’t understand that eating for health and caring for your body’s needs is not a typical “diet” with a beginning and an end! Stacy has almost no pain, 100 pounds less to carry around, no digestive or allergy symptoms, energy and vitality. She can’t fathom trading that in for sugar and bread!

I’m hoping her story inspires a lot more people to do the same. If you just don’t know where to start or if you have the willpower to make healthy changes, but you want to feel better, maybe it’s time to invest in health coaching at WSMT. We offer individual coaching sessions as well as groups who can support each other. Even 1 little change to start can make a big difference in your health and wellbeing. You’re worth it! Does an Apple a Day
Keep the Doctor Away?

It's officially autumn in Wisconsin and along with the cooler temperatures and changing colors of the tree foliage comes fresh apple season.  We have many orchards here that offer direct sales to customers.  I'm on my second batch already!

We all know the old adage, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."  Is there any truth to the idea that eating a daily apple will keep you healthy and not in need of medical services?  Well, it turns out that apples are great for you because they are loaded with phytochemicals, fiber, and a satisfying crunch that can feed you what you need and keep you from the potato chip bag.  But they don't necessarily result in fewer doctor visits per year.

Hold on to your hat, though, because the news from the study that showed this might be even better:

"Evidence does not support that an apple a day keeps the doctor away; however, the small fraction of US adults who eat an apple a day do appear to use fewer prescription medications."  JAMA, 2015

So....the adage now goes, "An apple a day keeps the pharmacist away!"  That sounds even better to me.  Eat your apple today and you may need fewer medications tomorrow.  That's fewer side effects, less cost, less wear and tear on your liver, and less disease in the first place.  Excuse me now, I'm hungry for an apple!

Make the First Meal Great

Are you a breakfast skipper?  With so many great options to start the day with excellent, delicious nutrition, maybe this is a new health habit you want to explore.

After sleeping all night and performing all the minute processes that the body does during sleep, breakfast is a nice reward and a great way to fuel up for a productive day.

The farmers markets are still giving us a bounty.  Today I started with a little farm bacon grease. (Do those very words make you think you'll gain weight?  Then call that bioactive lipids, because your body needs quality fats!)  Last time I made bacon I poured off the fat into a jar which went into the freezer.  Now I have some in the refrigerator for sautéing.

Chopped up jalapenos were next.  When they cook in a pan for awhile they get browned and tender and the heat becomes pleasant, not biting.  After that 2 farm eggs got cracked on top.  When that's done it goes on a plate with chopped up fresh tomatoes and a grinding of black pepper and coarse sea salt.  Do you see why I'm not keen to eat in restaurants much anymore?  Where could I get this and how much would it have to cost?

This was so quick, satisfying and fueling.  I'm good until lunch, easily.  The eggs provide protein, fat, and omega 3 essential oils.  The peppers and tomatoes give me 2 servings already today of vegetables loaded with phytonutrients to provide energy and chemicals that will help my body stave off disease.  All that and yummy too!  Healthy and yummy should always go together!

Are you lost when it comes to cooking healthy?  Stay tuned for free cooking classes we will be offering soon at WSMT!

Aspirations

I got out to Pewaukee High School this past week for career day.  Out of the 35 students who attended two sessions with me only 3 said they were interested in massage therapy.  All the things I personally hated about high school came roaring back to me:  the oppressive physical plant with low ceilings filled with rows of fluorescent lighting and hallways jammed with a flow of adolescent humanity, the cast of characters which really doesn't change from generation to generation, the literal waste of time (why were any of these kids forced to be in my session if they had no interest?)

The good news is that these kids were polite, at least, and the 3 who were interested had good questions and may show up at the school in a few years.  It gives me hope that there are some teenagers who aspire to help people in pain!

Join me on Thursday, November 3, 6:30-8:00 for a free cooking class here at WSMT.  I will demonstrate 3 quick and easy homemade soups.  You will get recipes and samples and you will be off and running with ditching canned soup for healthier, cheaper, and skinnier homemade versions.

I had fun teaching soup-making this past week at WSMT as part of our Health Coaching program. I made Apple-Squash Soup, Blended Broccoli Sausage Soup, and Curried Chickpea Stew over Spiced Quinoa. It was very gratifying to open eyes to the delicious joys of preparing healthy and hearty soups that make it quick and easy to feed your family.

We also explored the ingredients of canned Hormel Chili, the “#1 Selling Chili in America!” It was shocking to see that in one small can of this chili you could find 2 servings and a full days worth of salt. I don’t know about you, but when I make chili I don’t put in sugar, flavoring, corn flour or soy flour either. Participants got to see how making your own soup gives you control over all the ingredients.

There were smiles all around when the tasting started and I was super excited that some hesitant tasters said they really liked the soups! Stay tuned for other fun cooking classes like this coming up soon!

State of the Profession

There have been some nation-wide changes in the profession recently.  Fewer people are entering the field of massage therapy.  This has probably prompted some of the changes in the schools in our area.  One big school was bought out by a national chain school and absorbed into an institution that provides training in a lot of disciplines.  Another big school was sold to some employees and moved to a small location.  The small school most like us has also been sold and moved out of Milwaukee.  Two or three schools have closed altogether.  Employers who have always been hungry for graduates have become ravenous, imploring us to send them trained professionals ASAP!

Here is the good news:  we aren't going anywhere!  When we started, in 2002, we were up against huge competition.  The state inspector advised us to not even try it.  He was surprised we made it a year.  But we were determined then, as we are now, to provide some clarity in the murky field of massage therapy education.  We put together a concise curriculum with excellent instructors at a cost effective price.  And we succeeded.

What makes us different?  We don't scrimp on you when you come to us.  We buy you the top-of-the-line table.  We get enough instructors in to coach you when you are doing the crucial learning of body mechanics.  Our curriculum is designed by an educator with a masters degree in curriculum and instruction.  We refine our program based on current research and student feedback.  We add new schedule options and advanced training classes often.  Our instructors have been with us a long time because they are highly valued in our organization and they LOVE to teach!

It has been our commitment to quality that has given us the edge in this challenging environment.  That's the reason the people wanting to become excellent massage therapists have found us over the years as they still do.

Are you ready to realize your professional dreams of helping others to get healthier through massage therapy? Our next professional training class will begin soon. How to Get Rich Quick

"I cannot tell you ... how to be rich. But I can tell you how to feel rich, which is far better, let me tell you firsthand, than being rich. Be grateful... It is the only totally reliable get rich quick scheme."

I heard the Ben Stein quote above in my pastor's message on Sunday and it really resonated with me this week of Thanksgiving, 2016.  I know I have this richness.  I live in the USA where I have many freedoms I hold dear.  I have a home, plentiful food, and clean water.  These are lavish luxuries in many parts of the world.  I have a husband who has loved me and who I have loved for these 24 years of marriage and 4 more that we've been together.  I have family, friends, employees and a business that all support me.  I have health which all by itself is an amazing treasure. I have faith in God who has given me love and a perspective on life I couldn't otherwise have.  These are the huge and overarching blessings of my life.

There are also uncountable smaller things that I often overlook and take for granted every day.  How important is a pet?  Well, that picture of Charlie at the top of the page is a miracle.  He has congestive heart failure from a disintegrating heart valve and should not have lived much past June.  He is still running 2 miles a day, enjoying his life, and loving us with his whole being.  We don't know how long he'll go, but we are grateful for every new day that he is able to enjoy.

Just before writing this I noticed the soft carpet underfoot on some cold floor tiles in our house.  The house, the tiles, the carpet, feet...it goes on and on.  This week I pray for a grateful heart that continues all year for all of us.  May you realize your riches and saturate yourself in thankfulness.

Washington County Humane Society Festival of Trees

Again this year WSMT has sponsored a tree in the Washington County Humane Society's Festival of Trees.  Ours is a contemplative tree with placards that remind, "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, that's why it's called the present."  The trees tiny gift-ornaments are hand crafted by my assistant, Rosi Tomaz, from recycled Christmas cards.  Our tree and about 50 others are being raffled off this weekend at the WCHS.  Come out for a lot of fun with music, food, face-painting, the tree raffle and a gift boutique all to benefit the fine work of the humane society!

Today is a Gift

Cookie baking, doughnuts in the break room, holiday parties with lavish spreads - we're all up against many health destroyers this month!  Why do we waste a whole month of our lives punishing our bodies each year?  Why waste even a day?  Do you remember a time when you were in good physical condition and your weight was healthy?

It's a good time to think about how you want to start 2017.  You could be that 5-10 pounds heavier that studies show we are prone to put on at this time of year.  You could be sluggish and disgusted with yourself.  What a "gift" to give yourself for ending another year of work!

Now, let's reframe that picture.  You have been strategic for this month.  You planned for each event so you could enjoy without overindulging.  You wake up each morning refreshed and energized for the day.  You feed yourself in a loving way, deciding on healthy, delicious food that satisfies in ways that sugar never can.  You have carved out time to move in your weekly schedule because it feels good and makes you lithe and happy.  You are investing each day in healthier you for a fun January that starts off 2017 better than ever!

Me too.  Let's do this.  I made cookies yesterday and ate one.  I bought a rower and I'm using it.  I've actually lost a little weight this month already. Come along, get some help here at WSMT.  We have 2 ACE certified health coaches ready to help you move through this tough month with grace and light!  Special:  We are slashing the initial consultation fee from $49 to $25 for the month of December to help you get started!  The first step?  Call us:  262-250-1276 or  email me:  mary-mack@live.com.

Happy New Year

Well here we are again at the last day of the year.  It was a rocky ride, I think, but we made it to today.  Charlie, our dachshund, has charged right to this day in spite of a diagnosis 1 year ago of congestive heart failure.  He has outlived his 6 months expiration date and he doesn't seem like he's going anywhere soon.  There is much to celebrate.  Watching Charlie each day I am reminded how none of us has any guarantee about tomorrow.  Make the most of each day!
