So it's cross country skiing time in Wisconsin! We had a big snowfall which motivated me to get to REI and buy a set of skis. My bicycle is happily resting in the basement after a season of over 800 road miles and, although I did get my last ride in on December 1st, I became resigned to putting it to bed for the season. Now 800 miles really isn't a lot but I didn't start until July! So I'm counting it as a great season.
I've always wanted to ski, but I have always wrestled with buying/renting equipment and finding places to go. This year while riding my bike and thinking about the long, cold winter to come I decided this would be the year to actually do it. Boy, it feels good to follow through on something you've been wanting to do for a long time. Who needs New Year Resolutions? Just Do It is a great slogan.
Already I'm enjoying winter more. New snow isn't just a removal job, but also the thrill of nicer skiing. Getting outside to enjoy nature when it is so cold is great. And it's such good exercise you don't feel cold while doing it. Here I am at Pike Lake State Park. There is the beautiful frozen lake behind me. On this day I experienced bubbling brooks, greenery trying to hang on under the snow, fresh deer tracks, and a hush that new snow brings on the world. What a great way to clear the mind and body and get away from the commercial celebration of the season.
I encourage you to find a way to connect with the natural world. Slow down and appreciate the quiet of winter for what it is; a time to be home where it is warm enjoying a hot soup after some thrilling exertion out in the snow! Merry Christmas everyone!
